Tabarinades. Playful Parody!
Early
Saturday, January 30, 2010
Music and burlesque theatre with Les Tabarinades, featuring actors Jean-François Gagnon in the role of Tabarin, forerunner of Molière, a comic actor famous for his earthy humour, and Carl Béchard in the role of Maître Mondor. Les Boréades will bring together twelve musicians for the occasion, and the show will be staged by Jean-François Gagnon. Tabarin, now little-known, was a very funny predecessor of Molière. From up on his stage, surrounded by the actors and musicians of his troupe, “with his endless beard, multiform hat, and baggy pants,” Tabarin entertained passers-by and onlookers on the Pont Neuf and in the place Dauphine. His short farces, accompanied by music, were adaptations into French of the most ludicrous and saucy situations of the commedia dell’arte. He was a master of seventeenth-century vaudeville! |
