Quatuor Bozzini + Zinc & Copper Works

Contemporary
  • A Innovations en concert presentation
  • Bozzini Quartet, string quartet and inc & Copper Works (Berlin), brass microtonal trio

Monday, December 12, 2011 8:30 pm

Bozzini Quartet

Since 1999 the Bozzini Quartet has performed worldwide, exploring with equal eagerness both traditional concerts and avant-garde events. In this concert, these world-class musicians offer Montreal audiences the unique opportunity to experience Luigi Nono’s Fragmente-Stille, an Diotima. The Diotima of the title refers to the name that the German poet Hölderlin used to describe his secret love Susette Gontard, andFragmente-Stille, an Diotima is based on his poetic meditations on that relationship, striving for what Nono calls a “delicate harmony of inner life”. Music on the threshold of silence.

Zinc & Copper Works

Consisting of horn, trombone and tuba, the Berlin-based trio Zinc & Copper Works distinguishes itself by both its musical virtuosity and innovative, pioneering research. The trio performs on specifically designed and constructed instruments which create unique a sound world of timbres and sonorities.

The trio will perform Robin Hayward’s composition Grave Mountain Diagram. The piece is inspired by the research of Jan van Gorp, a sixteenth-century Dutch physician, linguist and humanist who believed that Brabantic (the Flemish dialect spoken between the Scheldt and Meuse rivers), was the original language spoken in Paradise. Van Gorp’s eccentric ideas are explored through the use of microtonal techniques, in a tribute to a quixotic search for knowledge which paradoxically formed a foundation for the field of historical linguistics.
