Up to Your EarsA Innovations en concert production. Montréal Summer New Music Series 2001. What’s new this Summer? Plenty, especially when it comes to the musical imagination of Montreal’s most innovative composers and performers. For the third year running, Christ Church Cathedral and Innovations en concert present a summer series where composers, performers and music lovers meet in an informal atmosphere to discover the fascinating range of contemporary chamber music being created in this country, and abroad. From organ concerts to saxophone quartets, electroacoustic music to Evensongs, improvisational ensembles to virtuoso solo performances, we invite you to join us each Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday for passionate music making in the intimate setting of one of downtown Montreal’s finest architectural and music environ-ments: Christ Church Cathedral. Christ Church Cathedral With eighteenth-century beginnings as the first Protestant church in Montreal, Christ Church became a cathedral in 1850 when the Anglican Diocese of Montreal was established. The original building stood on Notre Dame Street in Old Montreal, but was completely destroyed by fire in 1856. The new Cathedral (designed by British architect Frank Wills) was completed in 1859, on its present site which has since become the heart of downtown Montreal. From sung services to concerts and recitals, the Cathedral has always maintained a prominent place in the musical life of Montreal. Under the direction of Patrick Wedd, the Cathedral’s three main choirs currently provide music for some 150 services per year, as well as for special seasonal festivals and concerts. Recent recordings of our musicians include a CD of Christmas choral music for the ATMA label (In dulci jubilo), and a CD celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Cathedral’s Karl Wilhelm organ on the Madrigal label (Thèmes et variations). The Cathedral has two resident ensembles, the Baroquen Voyces and the Trio Fibonacci, that give concerts throughout the year and perform with the choirs on special occasions. Regular organ and chamber music recitals on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, feature this city’s wealth of talented musicians, from promising young performers to members of the Montreal Symphony and other established professionals. Christ Church Cathedral is very pleased to collaborate once again this year with Innovations en concert, to bring you our third annual summer new music series: Up to Your Ears.
